Road House Remake's Streaming Controversy: Jake Gyllenhaal Finally Responds To Director's Boycott

Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor respond to director Doug Liman’s boycott of Road House's premiere as the film’s release controversy continues.

Road House is getting a Prime Video release, which has prompted a boycott from director Doug Liman who wanted the movie to go theatrical.

Jake Gyllenhaal responds by expressing admiration for Liman's passion, but affirming that the Amazon was plain about the movie going straight to streaming.

Conor McGregor supports the theatrical experience and expresses interest in talking to Jeff Bezos about the ordeal.

Road House stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor respond to director Doug Liman's boycott of the remake's premiere. Serving as a remake of the 1989 Patrick Swayze film, Road House features Gyllenhaal starring as Dalton, a former MMA fighter who takes a job as a bouncer at a Florida dive bar. The film is slated for a Prime Video exclusive release next month, which has prompted Liman to boycott the film's SXSW premiere and criticize Amazon for not giving the movie a theatrical bow.

Jake Gyllenhaal: "I adore Doug’s tenacity, and I think he is advocating for filmmakers, and film in the cinema, and theatrical releases. But, I mean, Amazon was always clear that it was streaming. I just want as many people to see it as possible.

"And I think we’re living in a world that’s changing in how we see and watch movies, and how they’re made. What’s clear to me, and what I loved so much, was [Liman’s] deep love for this movie, and his pride at how much he cares for it, how good he feels it is, and how much people should see it."

"I’ve also sat watching a film on my computer, or in different places, and been so profoundly moved. If the job of a story is to move people, I have been moved in both forms. I’m a deep lover of cinema and the theatrical release – but I also do really embrace the streaming world."

Ahead of the Road House remake's release date, Gyllenhaal breaks his silence about Liman's boycott and the controversy surrounding the movie during a recent interview with Total Film (via GamesRadar). Notably, the star clarifies that Amazon had been very forthright about the movie being a streaming only release. McGregor, who plays Knox in the film, also weighs in on the drama.
